As the world grapples with the pressing issue of food insecurity, our organization, Intergenerational Rescue Foundation Inc., is proud to introduce Agroween, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at eradicating hunger and promoting sustainable food systems. Since the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) in 2015, numerous efforts have been made to address this global challenge. However, despite these endeavors, the numbers remain staggering.
According to the latest reports, approximately 828 million people worldwide suffer from hunger (Source: FAO, 2022). In Africa, the situation is particularly dire, with 20.4% of the population undernourished (Source: FAO, 2022). In Nigeria, 40% of the population faces food insecurity, with Lagos State being one of the most affected regions (Source: FEWS NET, 2022). In the past few years, these numbers have been increasing, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating the situation.
However, Agroween is determined to change this narrative. As a research project turned academic social hub, we engage students, food enthusiasts, and community members in sustainable food production, social services, and research innovations. Our approach is multifaceted:
One of the highlights of our annual calendar is the Agroween Food, Agriculture, and Innovation Festival. This convergence brings together members, prospective members, and stakeholders to showcase their research innovations, annual harvests, and farm produce. The festival features:
- Research exhibitions: Members showcase their innovative projects and research findings on sustainable food systems.
- Annual harvest showcase: Members display their farm produce, highlighting the impact of sustainable agriculture practices.
- Bazaar and auction sales: Fresh farm produce is sold, with proceeds supporting our initiatives and local farmers.
This event not only promotes knowledge sharing and networking but also provides a platform for our members to showcase their talents and innovations. As the renowned anthropologist, Margaret Mead, once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." At Agroween, we believe that humanity is the solution to the problems we face, and we're committed to making a lasting impact.
By supporting Agroween, the UN and government agencies can amplify their efforts to achieve Zero Hunger. Together, we can create a world where everyone has access to nutritious food, and no one has to suffer from hunger.
